Ishmael Beah: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier
Tuesday, April 7th, 2009
7:00 – 8:45 pm
Burns Back Court
Presented by ASLMU’s Social Justice and Intercultural Affairs Committees
Ishmael Beah was born in Sierra Leone, where at the age of thirteen he was forced to become a child soldier. For three years he fought and killed as a result of the powerful brainwashing effects of drugs and coercion. He eventually was rescued by UNICEF and moved to the U.S. to escape increasing violence. His book, A Long Way Gone, has earned widespread acclaim. Listing it as the third best non-fiction book of 2007, Time Magazine called the book, “painfully sharp,” saying that it “takes readers behind the dead eyes of the child-soldier in a way no other writer has.” Mr. Beah currently works with the Human Rights Watch Children’s Division Advisory Committee. His talk will focus on his life experiences while addressing the greater theme of acting for justice in an increasingly complex and interrelated world.
Check out this interview with Mr. Beah:

Nick Frontiera and Alexis Aiello: Leaders you can count on for the progress you deserve.
Presidential candidate, Nick Frontiera a Humanities major/Business minor and Vice Presidential candidate Alexis Aiello a Biology major/Communication Studies minor, come together to bring you the dynamic ticket you want in the ASLMU office. Just as the President and Vice President should be representatives of the student body and exemplify all characteristics of student life, Nick Frontiera and Alexis Aiello have proven themselves to be true Lions on this campus. For the past three years, both have actively been involved in ASLMU and have demonstrated their leadership skills.
Nick Frontiera has served on the ASLMU Programming Committee for the past three and has actively participated in the planning and executing of events on campus such as Collegefest and Vegas Night. In his Freshmen year, he helped found Club ChangeTheWorld which raised almost $20,000 in it’s first year of existence. The club went on to win Best New Club of the Year and Best Philanthropic Program at the Crimson and Blue Awards in 2007. Since his Freshmen year, Nick has been a part of club sports, Late Night, Greek life, and served as Co-President LMU ChangeTheWorld.
Graduating high school as the Student Body President, Alexis Aiello sought to continue developing her leadership skills once she came to LMU. In her freshman year she served as a senator and helped revise the ASLMU constitution which serves as the backbone of our student government. Also, in her Sophomore year Alexis was appointed to the position of the ASLMU Director of Special Events where she organized programs, such as the annual Christmas tree lighting. Coming to LMU as a Leadership Scholar, Alexis became involved with Special Games, Operation Smile, Pre-Health Honors Society, and helped found the annual Think Pink Breast Cancer Walk.
Our goals consist of encouraging a dynamic and vibrant work ethic within the ASLMU office to improve the community aspects of our campus. Furthermore, we want to utilize all resources LMU has to offer and make them as accessible to students as possible. Whether it is faxing a student’s resume for an internship, referring a student to their specific department of interest, or assisting clubs and organizations in planning events on campus, students should know we are here to work on their behalf. While promoting ASLMU’s availability and open door policy, we want to implement a new program called “Free CONVOsation” to communicate to students personally. Our promise to you is our time and dedication to address the needs and desires of the students on this campus.
Katherine Bardis & Stephanie Chapluk: Real Students,

Brea Bass
Class of 2012
Major: Political Science
Hi, my name is Breea Bass. I’m currently a First Year, Political Science and African American Studies double major, and I’m running to be reelected to the ASLMU Senate. This year I have been involved on campus as a sitting ASLMU Senator, Student Reserve Board Member, and First Year Class Council member. During my current term as an ASLMU Senator I have served as the Director of Administrative and Faculty Relations as well as a student/administration liaison. Throughout the duration of my term I have worked on such initiatives as the LMU student bill of rights, establishing additional resources for Clubs, Greek Organizations, and Student Groups, reevaluating the core curriculum, documenting Public Safety Protocol, raising Environmental awareness, and Advocating for student concerns. Each of these initiatives are priorities that I intend to continue and expand granted I am elected for another term. Given the experience I have gained this year I am confident that if I am reelected for another term I will continue to be a strong advocate on your behalf.
Bryce Couture
Class of 2010
Major: Business/Law
I have been involved with ASLMU through the Campus Community department here on campus. I helped teach and get people to register to vote. I also helped promote the Party Smart function that was in the living room, which was a function that helped students understand their off campus rights. One big accomplishment while attending school was getting over 500 LMU students registered to vote in the presidential elections. I have been involved in the Campus Community department for quite a while now, and I acquired experience on how to get things done, and what things need to get done. I have learned which kind of events appeals to students. I am part of Greek life and have been involved in intercultural clubs her on campus. I believe that ASLMU should help make neighbor relations better with students off campus, and that we should give students a bigger voice on what and how events are thrown on campus.
Moses Galvez
Class of 2012
Major: Psychology
Minor: Spanish
My name is Moses Galvez currently majoring in psychology and a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon expecting to graduate in 2012. Winning a position as a freshman senator this fall has been a great accomplishment, allowing me to better understand the system of government that addresses student concerns at LMU. Furthermore, after having nearly a year of experience I have been able to better analyze issues that affect the student population regardless of major and class standing. During my time in office I worked with other senators to tackle the issues concerning public safety protocol, environmental awareness, and was a liaison for fifteen student run clubs including Greek organizations to establish a firm relation with ASLMU Senate to promote awareness about issues concerning LMU. Having built closer relationships with current senators who are running again, I plan on working closely with them on current projects such as creating a student bill of rights, re-evaluating the core curriculum, and establishing a formal legal council for students.
Name: Tyler Ingram
Class of 2010

Over the past three years, Tyler has been an active member of his fraternity, holding the positions of Public Relations Chair and Vice President of Communications. He has helped plan various philanthropic functions on campus and is also an active member in Lambda Pi Eta, the communication studies honor society. His primary goal is to maintain open lines of communication between the student body and ASLMU. As a member of the senate, Tyler hopes to enact change and address the wants and needs of the students at LMU.
Ben Kassis
Class of 2010
Communication Major, Political Science Minor
LMU needs a governing body that is physically and intellectually in touch with the students of the university. In accordance, there is to be a constant and open channel of communication between ASLMU representatives and the constituency of undergraduates represented. This channel must increase in its visibility and remain available for any deserving discrepancy discussions regarding on-campus activities. The Senate is responsible for this and as a member I will do my part to guarantee this process, making my name a recognizable one to the entirety of the student body. As a student advocate with a broad understanding of this campus I will be relentlessly available to listen to any and all legitimate policy change suggestions. I will communicate this will on a daily basis while remaining a faithful catalyst for any change that shall take place in the following year.
Julia Roberts
Class of 2011
Major: Psychology
I am Julia Roberts a sophomore psychology major from Chicago. I am a second term senator and the Chair of Academic Affairs. I have the experience and the drive to keep senate progressing and preparing even greater things for the student body this upcoming academic year. I am a great communicator with the student body, faculty and staff; this will ensure that your voices will be heard and that we will accomplish all of our goals to be a better university! If you vote for me, I will ensure that senate will take the next step in furthering our strong representation of the student body in ASLMU as well as around campus.
Ashley Woods
Class of 2010
Major: communication
Minor: Buisness
“The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.” Albert Einstein. My name is Ashley Woods and I am a junior communication studies and African American Studies double major from Pasadena, California. This is the part where most people give you blanket promises, but I refuse to do what most politicians do. I believe in speaking up for what’s right regardless of what’s considered “politically correct”. I will be the out spoken voice that advocates what the student body is demanding. As your senator, I will lead by empowering students to take action and become fully alive as our LMU motto suggests; Ad majorem Dei Gloriam, for the greater Glory of god, the Greater Glory of God being a human fully alive. Now you have all the power in choosing your campus leadership by casting your vote. “Change your campus, vote”.
Raymond Padilla
Class of 2012
Major: Undecided
I am member of the class of 2012 and an undecided major. I previously have held several positions in Student Government as well as leadership positions in other club activities. Formerly I was the Student Body Religion Commissioner during my senior year, as well as a club representative for the Environmental Awareness Team, sophomore and junior years of high school. Furthermore during my senior of high I was the President of the Campus Ministry team as well of the member of the Dean’s Senate. Each of my positions required several hours of commitment during the school week and weekend. I am very comfortable with speaking to administrative officials on behalf of the students, regarding issues of social justice, environmental concern, and disciplinary issues. Personally I have helped to rebuild a locally closed zoo, as well as donating thousand of goods to a battered women’s shelter. I am an advocate for the students and our concerns. Over the next year, I feel that the student body along with ASLMU needs to address community relations with the residents of Westchester, the issue of bikes being stolen(personal victim), as well as increase of restrictions set forth by the department of public safety. It is one of my personal goals to return the power or parking ticket appeals to return the ASLMU Senators, as well as promoting better community relations between the students who chose to reside off campus among the residents of Westchester. Lastly I would hope to increase the number of campus wide activities to increase school spirit. GO LIONS!
Arthur Flores
Class of 2012
Major: Business Law
It would be my distinct pleasure to serve as an ASLMU Senator for the 2009/2010 academic school year. Having attained prior experience in student government since 2006, I am confident in my abilities to represent the students of Loyola Marymount University. As senator I look to further express LMU’s,already nationally recognized, passion toward service both on campus and off. Being a member of the Magis Service Organization and having directly engagedin serving our community, I am certain of my abilities to assure the concerns of students. As an advocate for school spirit, I pledge to promote LMU’s Athletic programs more collectively. Through, and only through, collaboration with the students can we achieve the level of enthusiasm and encouragement that our sports teams need. As senator I will adhere to the needs of both students and student athletes in uniting us under a common purpose to see to it that pride in LMU athletics receives the recognition it deserves. Lastly, as senator I would exercise my charisma to see that the legislations inspired by undergraduate students are followed through and accomplished. It would be an honor to serve as a member of the ASLMU Senate.

Alright so here’s the deal people, I know you have all been patiently waiting to hear the big announcement on who will be playing collegefest this year. Well I have some pretty big news to reveal. This year, we are bringing in not 1, not 2, but 3 artists to perform! Are you ready for them?
Alright, the first artist!
**Drum roll**
Playing this year at LMU’s collegfest is…
Shiny Toy Guns!

Although formed in sunny California during the early 2000s, Shiny Toy Guns’ music flaunts a sleek, ’80s-influenced combination of synth-pop and electro-clash. Founded in 2001 by bassist/keyboardist Jeremy Dawson and guitarist/vocalist Gregori Chad Petree — both natives of central Oklahoma — the band’s lineup was fully realized with the addition of vocalist Carah Faye Charnow (who was brought aboard in 2004 to replace the departing Ursula Vari) and drummer Mikey Martin. After building a local following in California, Shiny Toy Guns made its debut in early 2005 with We Are Pilots; the album was then re-recorded and reissued later that year, albeit with a slightly different track list. Extensive touring and networking on various Internet websites continued to broaden the Guns’ audience, and the group signed a contract to Universal Records in June 2006. That year also saw the third (and final) release of We Are Pilots, this time issued with the help of a major label. The album fared well commercially and critically, eventually earning a Grammy Award nomination for “Best Electronic/Dance Album” in early 2008. Carah Faye Charnow left the lineup later that year, claiming that the group’s male members had booted her out, while veteran vocalist Sisely Treasure (a former member of Cooler Kids, as well as a finalist on the first season of the Pussycat Dolls’ reality show) was enlisted to replace her. With the new lineup intact, Shiny Toy Guns released its second album, Season of Poison, in November 2008.

Alright, next up is….
Rebelution!

Rebelution first united in Santa Barbara, California, built from a wide array of musical backgrounds. With Reggae as the focus, the group set out to create a fresh and vibrant sound which they dub California Reggae. The band released their highly anticipated full-length album in June of 2007 and just weeks after its release, “Courage to Grow” became one of the most downloaded Reggae albums on iTunes. By the end of the year, it had been awarded the iTunes Editors Choice: Best Reggae Album 2007.
“Apparently, California Reggae is hot. Stemming from a foundation of local support, Rebelution soared into iTunes Reggae Top 10 (album downloads), amongst some lofty company. Lofty like Bob, Stephen, and Damian Marley.” — Santa Barbara News-Press
Rebelution’s dynamic sound is led by diverse vocalist and guitarist Eric Rachmany. Together with the elevating melodies of Rory Carey keyboards and hard-hitting beats by bass player Marley D. Williams and drummer Wesley Finley, the band will make you move both physically and mentally.
“If you love Bob Marley, Sublime, and Jack Johnson and you’re a regular on the State Street scene, then chances are you’re already crazy about Rebelution. Their combination of reggae, hip-hop, and rock have made them a favorite of music lovers all over town.” — The Santa Barbara Independent
Within the last year, Rebelution has made a name for themselves with their iTunes success and performances with notable artists like Barrington Levy, Israel Vibration, Junior Reid, Don Carlos, Pepper, Eek-A-Mouse, Pato Banton, Tanya Stephens, Half Pint, SOJA, Yellowman, Talib Kweli, E-40, and The Pharcyde. Rebelution has already proven themselves in the musical arena and intends to further expand their success with a sound that confidently claims itself unique.

Cold War Kids!

Fullerton, CA’s Cold War Kids make music with roots that go deep and wide, embracing influences as diverse as Bob Dylan, Billie Holiday, Jeff Buckley, and the Velvet Underground. Matt Aveiro, Matt Maust, Jonnie Russell, and Nathan Willett began crafting their soulful, blues-inflected take on indie rock as Cold War Kids in 2004, recording demos in Los Angeles soon after they formed. After signing to Monarchy Music, Cold War Kids released their debut EP, Mulberry Street, in spring 2005. The band’s unique sound and impassioned live act generated a buzz — particularly from bloggers — that grew with each tour and release. Maust’s clean but eye-catching designs for EPs like With Our Wallets Full and Up in Rags and the group’s website also added to Cold War Kids’ mystique. They spent much of 2006 on the road with Tapes ‘n Tapes, Figurines, Sound Team, and Editors and appeared at that year’s Lollapalooza. That summer, they signed to Downtown Records, also home to Art Brut and Gnarls Barkley. The band’s full-length debut Robbers & Cowards arrived that fall. Loyalty to Loyalty, which moved in a slower, bluesier direction, was released in 2008.
